Expressing serious concern over the rising incidents of braid-chopping, the J&K State Commission for Women has asked the police to seek cooperation of people, apprehending that the chaos could vitiate peace in the Valley.
Chairperson of the commission Nayeema Ahmad Mehjoor, who held a discussion with the civil society, media and the police today, said the police need to step in for restoring the shaken faith and confidence of the people.
“The government through the Health Department should also clear the air about the chemical spray and its adverse effects in the long run,” Mehjoor added.
She said during the discussion, the participants suggested that special investigative teams of the police and the committees formed by the government at the district level for this purpose should share the outcome of their findings with the commission on a regular basis.
“The government should involve the women’s commission and civil society wherever such incidents are reported,” she added.
Mehjoor said the increasing incidents had a potential to vitiate peace in the Valley and the police top brass should sensitise their men to take the reports of braid-chopping seriously.
She has also appealed to the people to cooperate with the authorities concerned in addressing the issue.
The police said there had been more than 50 incidents of braid-chopping reported from different parts of Kashmir. However, there has not been any breakthrough so far about the mysterious people involved in it.
The incidents have lead to protests in many parts of the Valley, with people coming onto roads and demanding the arrest of the culprits.
